Interview: Sayaka Nasu

Sayaka Nasu (@__artbitch__) is a Japanese photographer whom we hold in high regard.  Her fine-art like photography retains an emotive warmth through muted color palettes and carefully thought out compositions. We were lucky enough to catch her and and ask a few short questions!

You are quite an established photographer, please tell me, when and how did you start taking photos?

I actually received my first camera three years ago from an acquaintance. It was a 35mm analog camera and acted as a trigger for my passion.

As someone with such a creative and diverse portfolio, where do you draw inspiration from?

I am mostly inspired by details I take in from everyday life. Interior design, art and fashion are the topics that interest me most. You will find these well represented in my photography.
Additionally I’d like to mention three photographers who’s view on the world I enjoy tremendously.  Namely @eam0505, @satieee6 and @megtronik. (In no specific order).

I’m sure everyone is curious, what is your equipment of choice and what does your work-flow look like?

My favorite setup consists of a Canon 6D mounted with a Carl Zeiss Distagon T 35mm f/2 ZF2 lens. On my full-frame camera it has a view angle similar to a 50mm lens which is great for all applications.
As to my work-flow, it actually just consists of a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop. I try not to stylize my images too much.

If you had to choose one, which of your photos would be your favorite?

Recently I enjoy using chairs in my composition. If I had to choose a favorite it would be this one. It is a simple piece but I enjoy the atmosphere surrounding it.

Thank you very much for answering our questions! To close this off, do you have any advice for new and aspiring photographers out there?

Yes, be honest about your preferences and sense and don’t hesitate to express them. By doing so you will naturally attract the things you like and find yourself surrounded by these.
